The British Columbia Chef’s Association was founded by a small group of dedicated chefs in July, 1958 at a meeting at the Lougheed Hotel in Burnaby, BC. The first president and founding member was the late Wally Shaw, who also helped found the Canadian Federation of Chefs and Cooks (The Canadian Culinary Federation). Then known as “The Association of Chefs de Cuisine of BC”, the association was granted its charter on February 27, 1959. In June 1967, following changes in the constitution and bylaws, the name was changed to “The British Columbia Chefs’ Association.”The British Columbia Chef’s Association is dedicated to the education of both junior members and the upgrading skills of regular members. As well, annual scholarships are given out to deserving students who distinguish themselves in the culinary field in schools and institutions throughout the lower mainland. Money for these scholarships is raised through fund raising activities and through generous corporate donations. Other activities that this Association takes part in include Annual Christmas Parties, Summer Picnics, the President’s Ball, Apprentice Competitions, Local and National Conventions, Culinary Salons and other events to publicize the work of the professional chefs and cooks in British Columbia.Run by a group of dedicated volunteers elected every two years, the BC Chefs’ Association is current with today’s technology and maintains accurate updated files on membership, finances, projects, through this technology, as well, through regular correspondence. Future plans include continued involvement with fund raising activities, charitable causes and the constant growth and education of our membership.
